
Canadian tennis ace Denis Shapovalov overcame a delayed and sluggish begin to beat American Nishesh Basavareddy 7-5, 6-2 within the first spherical of the ATP 500 Mexican Open males’s singles division on Tuesday night time in Acapulco.
The ninth-seeded Richmond Hill, Ont., participant needed to endure a two-hour delay after which took some time to get going towards the 19-year-old qualifier from Newport Seaside, Calif. It was Shapovalov’s first match since capturing the Dallas Open title earlier this month.
Shapovalov completed with six aces, 9 double faults and 21 unforced errors. Basavareddy had one ace, two double faults and 16 unforced errors within the one hour 34-minute match.
Shapovalov completed at 77 per cent for factors gained on first serve, and 55 per cent for factors gained on second serve. He had 35 winners in comparison with his opponent’s 14. He saved three of 5 break factors, whereas Basavareddy saved seven of 12 break factors.
Shapovalov will face the winner of a match between American Alex Michelsen and Bu Yunchaokete of China within the spherical of 16.
