Olympic Peninsula: Leave cougars alone

Thanks for the article “Can WA’s Olympic Peninsula cougars coexist with human development?” [Oct. 1, Local News]. Cougars are a spectacular animal and we should always do what we will to assist them reside in pure areas of the Pacific Northwest. It’s dismaying that when a cougar kills livestock that the answer is to kill the cougar. How about leaving the cougar alone and fining the person who doesn’t handle their livestock in order that it’s protected from cougars?

Comparable for wolves. Cows and sheep shouldn’t be allowed to roam over public lands and must be pastured in fenced areas and guarded by guard canine.

For my part these will not be wildlife issues; they’re individuals and livestock issues.
