Re: “Wildfire devastates Hawaii’s Lahaina, historic town and onetime capital of former kingdom” [Aug. 10, Nation]:

The destruction of Lahaina was tragic for its folks and Hawaiian tradition. It’s painful for anybody who has visited Maui as a result of it’s certainly one of “the nice locations” we prefer to look again on. Seeing it incinerated was horrifying. I worry it’s certainly one of many painful goodbyes we are going to expertise as local weather change takes maintain.

There have likely already been different “Lahainas” unknown to us within the pure world, the place environments and related crops and animals are being extinguished by Earth’s warming and drying. Lahaina is a wake-up name to the ugly inevitability of what’s going to occur to all of us if we don’t face this hazard head-on. Coping with a planetary existential risk is one thing people have by no means earlier than addressed, but it surely’s obligatory now and even when we win this race in opposition to destruction, it’s going to be in a modified and sadder world.

Shall we start? Or shall we glance the opposite manner and return to our leisure tradition and our political bickering?
